My story:

My name is Edana Croyle and I’ve worked as a Speech/Language Pathologist (M.A., CCC-SLP) for over forty years with children of all ages across varying conditions: Autism, Specific Language Impairment, Down Syndrome, and Dyslexia.

When I became a grandmother, these speech and language challenges became personal. Listening to the babbling patterns of my grandchildren upon sleep and waking, I discovered vast differences.

One child, now 9, has excellent language skills. This child babbled continually using various sound combinations repetitively when going to sleep and waking. Later this toddler would utter repetitions of multisyllable words for which she had no semantic meaning when falling asleep. At this time she did not understand the meaning of the words, but was simply driven to practice putting the sounds together.

Another grandchild who was diagnosed to be on the Autism spectrum early on, had little to no babbling taking place upon rising or going to sleep, and language learning for him has been difficult.

Babble Buddy:

Breaking down various aspects of language helps a child become aware of patterns.

With this in mind and inspired by my grandchildren, I have patented and am continuing to develop a comfort toy which pairs light with infant cooing/babbling sounds to deliver visual and auditory cues to train at-risk infants and toddlers to babble effectively as one aspect of language learning.
